I decided wear my Apple Watch again on Tuesday. Had some Toggl timers I wanted to manage from it.

So, I plugged it into the charger after months of no usage. Then I decided to just restore it and re-configure it.

I wore it for like a day before I put it back where I found it.

The main problem for me, is that it was way too slow to trigger actions from. By the time it would take me to do it I might as well pick up my phone and do it myself.

Might be better on a more recent Apple Watch version. But I also think the current Apple Watch faces doesn't work that well with how I want to use it.

Feed changes

Published: 2021-04-16 18:30:00, Updated: 2021-04-16 18:30:00

I have used https://feed.press for years as a proxy to my RSS feed for years. It have had some value, like providing a static URL to my feed for years, through a ton of CMS changes.

A recent change in their pricing plus that I don't need any of what it provides, got me to look into it. And I'll be deleting my account there in a few weeks. I think they'll set up a redirect when I do so. But you should probably update to using one of the feeds listed here

New CMS

I have built a new cms for myself over the last week. Deployed it this morning. Far from done but still good enough.

My main motivation for it was to make it easier to deploy when I’m not at my real computer.

It’s written in C# and .NET 5 plus a admin UI in Svelte and SveteKit

I start to get really fucking sick of all the electron app bitching in the Apple community.

If you think something is bad just because it is an electron app you're a fucking moron.

How an app is made isn't that relevant. Native vs web based versus native but using cross platform things like Xamarin or React Native isn't important for how the end result will be. There are minor differences between each. And each of them have benefits.

Most of them are around business requirements or personal preferences. Plus that some stuff are easier to do in a web based app, while other things are easier in native apps. But at the end of the day making a great app is never easy.

What makes something good or bad is not bad native vs web, but rather designing a good user experience and sweating all the details and a lot of focus making it work well.

I've been kind of unhappy with my OmniFocus setup for a while now, and the notifications on tasks have been unreliable for a long time. So I decided to scrap it all and do something else. Jack wrote this and I decided to take an hour and do it.

I have migrated over to things, and restructured things from a lot of nested folders and projects to just a few projects and using Things's Headline feature instead.

Very happy about the change.

Decided to give Safari and NetNewsWire another go yesterday.

Safari is really good, and I love how much better it looks compared to Firefox or Chrome. I'll probably still have to use Firefox for a lot of development stuff because the browser extension stuff for Safari is still a fucking cluster fuck.

There is one thing about Safari that I really hate. If you pin a bunch of tabs, and close the last unpinned tab the browser window will close. It is a weird behaviour.

NetNewsWire is really good. It is probably the best RSS reader I have used in a really long time. I'm mostly happy with it, but I miss being able to map keyboard shortcuts like Reeder and ReadKit has. Where you can tell it to do things like "Clear out read articles", "open in browser", "send to instapaper" etc when you type a single letter. I've kind of replicated some of them with CMD+letter. But I'd love to not having to do that.

I don't get the whole WhatsApp thing. Either it isn't that big around here, or it's just that I'm not in contact with that many people. Might be both.

I just use Messsages and texting for most of it.

There are a lot of people I have no or a lot less contact with after I left Facebook, but here is thing, nobody said it would be easy or without sacrifice. It feels great to not use Facebook or any of the other properties it owns. Like WhatsApp or Instagram.

First day back and work, so this kind of feel like the first legit day of 2021.

I lost 17kg last year, and I hope to loose even more this year. I'm very happy about getting back into good habits early in the year. So I re-started my calorie tracking routine today and I went for a run. Not as long as I was when I took a break before christmas, but not that far off.

Domain changes

Published: 2021-01-03 11:08:10, Updated: 2021-04-09 03:29:15

I've decided to cut down a little on my domain expenses. All my website have been moved under hjertnes.website.

  • Hjertnes.blog -> blog.hjertnes.website
  • Hjertnes.blog -> wiki.hjertnes.website
  • Hjertnes.social -> gone
  • home.hjertnes.blog -> home.hjertnes.website

And I'll soon create a hjertnes.website with a index of my websites.

Published: 2020-12-21 05:05:59, Updated: 2021-04-09 03:29:15

My main focus of late have been my wiki and mastodon over the last year or so.

But as 2020 are concluding I've been thinking about what I'd like to change next year. One of them is that I'll start blogging more again.

I also made some traditional Norwegian christmas stuff for the first time yesterday:

Might also start participating the micro.blog community again. Haven't made up my mind on that.

I brought my wiki back this week. It kind of went offline when I went from roam to org-roam. But this week I found some time to write the stuff needed to generate it.

It is generated with this script. It takes all my org-roam notes that doesn't contain "#+private: true" and converts them to HTML with pandoc. And then this go program makes the index page.

None of it is fast, but it works. The plan is to do a weekly update.

Changing jobs

Published: 2020-10-16 17:52:55, Updated: 2021-04-09 03:29:15

I have my last day as a developer for Sbanken on Monday, and I'll have 2ish of vacation, before I join Knowit Experience as a Senior Developer in the start of November.

I'm really excited about this for many reasons. Two of them are:

  • I'll be using a Mac at work again. After two years of Windows, I can say that everything I hated about it in 2004, is still more or less the same
  • And I'll be working from the city center. I might start doing some street photography again.

There are of course many much more serious reasons for why I decided to change jobs and decided to join Knowit. But the two above is very important to be, no matter how silly it may look.

Blogging again?

Published: 2020-10-10 17:58:54, Updated: 2021-04-09 03:29:15

I have updated the design today. Stole some stuff from Eli and made it my own.

My wiki is down at the moment. Or not down, but there isn't a lot there. The reason is that I had that thing, and then I migrated it to https://roamresearch.com/ and then that became https://orgroam.com/ and I have no working way to publish that in a good way. So my wiki is just for me at the moment.

There are some changes to org-roam in the upcoming version that might make it easier to manage.

So I might post more here. Until then.

Stole some of the awesome colours from Eli.

Not a lot of content changes this week, but I'm attempting to use Roam as my wiki. Currently I have a private and public one. All the editing and writing is done in the private one. And then I export it. remove the stuff I don't want to be public and import it into the public one.

The process isn't as easy as I'd like, at the moment. So I will probably not update it every week.

  • Moved back to using hugo and ox-hugo to generate it. I'm really happy with the result. I think a lot of what I loved about the former format have been maintained, while not all the issues I had with the first attempt at building a wiki with ox-hugo.

Wiki updates

Published: 2020-07-24 14:11:47, Updated: 2021-04-09 03:29:15

Changes on my wiki since the last time I wrote one of these.

  • Yesterday I migrated from GitHub to Sourcehut. This have been a very long and slow process for me. On one side I didn't want to because I think GitHub is great. On the other I felt like I had to because of their relationship to ICE. Part of the problem is also that the service I use to build and serve my websites(https://netlify.com) require GitHub, GitLab or BitBucket. And I don't want to ditch Netlify and I wanted to use SourceHut because it is a indie business, open source and very simple and minimal. So I ended up going Sourcehut but also push changes to private GitLab repos in the cases where I need to publish to Netlify. Not ideal but the least terrible.
  • I also changed my GitHub sponsors to buymeacoffee
  • We let my best friend and dog Luna go on thursday. I have written something about it.

Migrating to my wiki

Published: 2020-07-11 08:17:09, Updated: 2021-04-09 03:29:15

My wiki have been my main website for a while now. I'm in the process of migrating the content of this blog over to it. I just removed all the "status" or "micro blog" posts. The next steps would be to go over everything and re-write it as something on my wiki for everything in the archive. It won't be a simple move but a longer process and probably many re-organizations in the process.

The purpose of this blog moving forward will be my Likes posts and writing about changes and updates on my wiki as I publish them

  • The org file my wiki was generated from is now included, will soon add a link to it and the github project
  • A links section. The idea is to add links I use all the time to this one
  • A Journal section. The idea is to add some limited in scope or time "blog like" series of texts here. Currently only one on how I think about making this wiki
  • Added a "last updated" timestamp to everything. Set to today.
  • Updated my comics list
  • Some small re-org of the emacs section

Updates in the last two weeks

Published: 2020-02-23 08:07:00, Updated: 2021-04-09 03:29:15

Most of my focus at the moment are going into my wiki, but because I don't have or want a RSS feed there, I'll write every week or every two weeks here about the changes I have done there.

  • I took all my blog post drafts I had and added them to the wiki
  • Did some simple re-organisation. I'll probably do more of it next week.
  • Went through everything and updated it
  • And I'm also playing around with the non stable version of Emacs again, the upcoming version 27. It has native support for JSX and tabs.

The other big thing I have been doing this week is to take a break from Micro.blog, like I wrote about on Friday. I appriciate how supportive a lot of people were about why I chose to do that. I'm currently checking out Mastodon.

Taking a break from Micro.blog

Published: 2020-02-21 17:56:12, Updated: 2021-04-09 03:29:15

Recent happenings here at Micro.blog have gotten me to taking a break from Micro.blog. It might be a short term or I might never come back. I have added all the RSS feeds of the people I followed to my RSS reader, and if you want to talk I'm always available on https://keybase.io/hjertnes. I'm not removing my site from Micro.blog for now, but I might do that in the future.

Who knows?

The reason I am leaving is that I believe Micro.blog has the oposite problem of Twitter. A lot of the time when someone are critical, negative or harsh people start to criticize it. Or sending me links to the community guidelines, even though what I said could not in any resonable proper interpretation be i violation of.

At the current state I don't feel like I can be myself here. It seems to me that the only style of writing that is okay here at the moment is what I would describe as "lunch at gradma" or "christian youth club". It is sad, because I do enjoy a lot of the people on here.

Bye.

Notes after listening to ATP 364

Published: 2020-02-07 12:44:58, Updated: 2021-04-09 03:29:15

I don't listen to any tech podcasts anymore, because they bore me to death. The closest is probably Go time, a podcast about the Go Programming Language. But @eli talked about how dumb the hosts were being so I decided to listen and post my reactions to it.

  • Oh my fucking god. So much talk about all kinds of bullshit...
  • SwiftUI
  • Who the fuck writes a view that is hundred or hundreds of lines.
    • Clean code and Single Responsibility FTW
  • Weird stuff is hard with declarative models because declarative programming tries to force you to not doing weird stuff, and weird stuff is almost always a bad idea.
  • Declarative programming is hard, but not impossible.
  • There is plenty of good examples of good patterns to follow if you look at for example react.
  • Even though three gumpy old rich white men don't think so, there are clean ways to use it
  • I think John is the only one who gets it
  • Marco struggles with anything new, as always. He is like a cobol programmer
  • Homebrew
  • Marco is all wrong.
  • Homebrew works well most of the time, and things rarely break as long as you keep things up to date. It might be broken for a few days here and there. But I almost never experience it, and I upgrade my system multiple times a week.
  • John builds from source, and that is the most John thing ever. HA

Recent stuff on my wiki

Published: 2020-01-26 05:57:46, Updated: 2021-04-09 03:29:15

I'll try to do this each week. But it will probably more like most weeks. Just a recep of what I have been doing on my wiki. Last week I worked a lot of the template to make it show everything more likea a outline inside of a large cloud of entries and tags. And I also updated most of the pages in it. Plus that I re-organized everything into a intial structure.

This week I have added a reviews section and posted five new drafts I had ready to it.
